I realized in residency that the patients that stuck most with me were those I cared for at our rotations at Memorial Sloan Kettering. I was inspired by the work of neuro-oncologists in caring for folks with both neurological complications of cancer and tumors of the nervous system. As a neuro-oncologist, you need to know all the domains of neurology (stroke, neuromuscular, epilepsy, autoimmune, headache, etc), and oncology, and internal medicine! No two days are different, and you are always learning. You can help folks by treating their diseases, managing their neurological symptoms, and empowering them with knowledge!
I shared more of my thoughts about why I love my field in an interview here:
